According to Hinds County Sheriff Tyree Jones, a jailer who worked for the Hinds County Sheriff’s Department was arrested and charged with extortion.

Sheriff Jones said the, now-former, jailer was identified as 37-year-old Darryl Jackson, Jr. He was immediately terminated.

The incident is still under investigation, but Sheriff Jones said they believe the scheme involved at least one inmate and possibly more.

Sheriff Jones said that Jackson was allegedly releasing an inmate/inmates in exchange for money.
