A Hinds County detective is on desk duty after being arrested on aggravated assault charges.

According to records from the Madison County Jail, Samuel Edwin Dukes was arrested by Ridgeland Police Department around 2 a.m. Thursday.

Ridgeland Police Chief John Neal said around 10 p.m. Wednesday, a woman called police from Sunchase Apartments. Officers arrived and found Dukes outside the apartment and he identified himself as a deputy with Hinds County.

She had visible marks and told police he had assaulted her, to include choking her. She told them they were in a dating-type relationship.

She was the one who signed the affidavit, Neal said.

Hinds County Sheriff’s Department Captain Tyree Jones said Dukes’ police powers have been suspended.

“He’s been reassigned to a civilian position,” he said, adding that there wouldn’t be anything else that Hinds County can release until the outcome of Ridgeland PD’s investigation. HCSO will also do their own internal probe to see if any policies or procedures have been violated.

Dukes has been at HCSO for around a year.
