Hattiesburg man fatally shot in argument over a woman

A man has died in Hattiesburg after being shot on Sunday.

Forrest County Deputy Coroner Lisa Klem said the victim from the Sunday morning fatal shooting has been identified as 39-year-old Akera Antionio Franklin, of Hattiesburg.

Police say they responded to a report of a shooting in the 200 block of Martin Luther King Avenue, just before 3 a.m. Sunday.

When officers arrived on scene, they discovered a deceased male that had been fatally shot.

The name of the victim is being withheld at this time, pending notification of next of kin by the Forrest County Coroner’s Office.

During the course of the investigation, officers arrested Rodrique Bowman, 21, of Hattiesburg, in connection with the incident. Bowman has been charged with first degree murder and possession of a stolen firearm.

Bowman and the victim are known acquaintances, and the altercation escalated from a domestic-related altercation over a female.

Shantari Carter, 30, of Hattiesburg, who is the sister of Bowman, was also arrested and charged with hindering prosecution in connection to the incident.

Bowman and Carter were booked into the Forrest County Jail.
