On Tuesday, November 29, at approximately 3:56 pm, officers with the Greenville Police Department were dispatched to the 1400blk of Highland Ave in reference to juvenile problems.
When officers arrived, they made contact with the parent of a 14-year-old female who stated that her daughter had been having sexual intercourse with an 18-year-old male.
The parent of the 14-year-old stated that her daughter had sexual intercourse with the male who was identified as 18-year-old Kimani Barnes of Greenville on 3 separate occasions.
The female juvenile’s case is being handled by the Washington County Youth Court, while Barnes was taken into custody on December 12, 2022, after a warrant was issued for his arrest.
Barnes was charged with two (2) Felony counts of Statutory Rape-victim under 14 [97-3-65(1)(B)]. He was transported to the Washington County Regional Correctional Facility where he awaits his initial appearance.
According to the law of the State of Mississippi (2017 Mississippi Code Title 97(97-3-65(1)(B), the crime of statutory rape is committed when:
(a) Any person seventeen (17) years of age or older has sexual intercourse with a child who:
(i) Is at least fourteen (14) but under sixteen (16) years of age;
(ii) Is thirty-six (36) or more months younger than the person; and
(iii) Is not the person’s spouse; or
(b) A person of any age has sexual intercourse with a child who:
(i) Is under the age of fourteen (14) years;
(ii) Is twenty-four (24) or more months younger than the person; and
(iii) Is not the person’s spouse.
Barnes is presumed innocent unless proven guilty.Â
