Helicopters respond to explosion in Flora

According to Madison County Fire Coordinator Minor Norman, six workers were seriously injured after an explosion at the Salt Water Disposal site on Virlilia Road in Canton Friday morning.

Norman said the call came in at 7:50 a.m. Madison Sheriff’s Department, Gluckstadt Fire Department, ambulances and helicopters responded to the scene.

According to Norman, workers were doing maintenance on two new parts that held water from an oil well. The tanks didn’t have much fluid. One of those oil tanks exploded, creating a fire bomb.

Six workers at the site were badly burned and injured.

Norman said that a couple of the workers have been listed in critical condition. Three were transported to UMC and three were transported to the burn unit at Central Merit Hospital.

The three workers transported to UMC will be taken to Merit Hospital shortly to also be treated at the burn unit.
