One Mississippi Sheriff is hoping that a little exercise will have a positive impact on the overall well-being of the inmates in his jail.

Clarke County Sheriff Anthony Chancelor said Friday that his administration and he had discussed the idea of basketball goals for a month before making a decision.

”We ultimately decided this was something worth trying out. While some may not agree, studies show that a balanced diet and adequate exercise can indeed have a positive impact on the mentality of corrections inmates,” Chancelor said.

The Sheriff added that the program will help is inmates in the areas of physical health, mental health, cognitive function, sleep quality, self esteem, and self control.

”These inmates are in the process of fulfilling their debt to society for the crimes they have committed; however at the end of the day they are still people and I feel it is my duty as sheriff to do what we can to help their long term well being,” Chancelor said.

He reminded those who might disapprove of the decision that the privilege to use the basketball goals can be taken away if there are problems.
