Byram PD Brings Community Together Just in Time for Christmas

Byram Police Department hosted their first “Christmas with the Cops” event at Byram City Hall on Thursday. The goal was to unite and further build a connection with the community that they are committed to serve and protect.

“We have focus alot on connecting with our youth this year,” Byram Police Chief David Erringtion said. “We conducted a summer program called the Byram Blue Dogs. For Christmas, we wanted to do something for the kids. We had a couple officers who said ‘Let’s put a toy drive together and collect donations’ and have the opportunity to have Christmas with the Cops. That way we can build trust with the community and give them more time to spend with us.”

The event kicked off with the arrival of Santa Claus who was personally escorted by the department. Every child was able to take part in a craft, visit with Santa, pick a gift from a wide selection of donated toys and grab a cookie and hot chocolate on the way out. Big ticket items such as a bike, a basketball goal and PlayStation 4 were given out in a raffle. Leftover toys will be donated to Toys For Tots.

“There were a lot of smiles from a lot of kids,” Erringtion said. “We want to support these families and show them that we’re here for them, spend time with them, and want to wish them a very Merry Christmas.”

Ten-year-old Annalise Kort of Byram was indecisive when picking a toy from the drive and was overwhelmed with all the choices. With the help of her mother, she ultimately decided on a Little Luv Baby doll and stroller.

“I don’t know what to pick and usually takes me a long time to decide, so I just guess alot of times,” Kort said.

From nearby Terry, 11-year-old Lacianica Hayes came in with excitement and was very appreciated of the men and women in blue that she interacted with.

“It made me feel good,” said Hayes. “They really supported and helps us tonight.”

Turnout was higher than expected and the department plans to make this an annual event.
