According to Rankin County Coroner David Ruth, a football player from Brandon High School died Monday.

The football player has been identified as 17-year-old Phillip Laster Jr.

Phillip Laster Jr.’s father said that his son collapsed during football practice and never regained consciousness.

Coroner David Ruth stated, “I responded to a local area hospital after being notified. I will be taking him to the medical examiner’s office in hopes of finding answers for this family.”

Phillip Laster (the teenager’s father) spoke with DarkHorse Press about his son.

He said,

“Phillip was a very lively, positive spirited young man whom was full of laughter and always kept positive energy. He was a gentle giant so to speak. He was very passionate about football and loved just hanging out with his friends. To know him was to love him. The whole city loved this young man, and no one ever has anything but positive things to say about his character. This was a great kid”

The Rankin County School District (RCSD) also released a statement about Phillip Laster Jr.’s death.

“We are saddened and heartbroken by the sudden loss of Brandon High School student athlete, Phillip Laster. Our thoughts and prayers are with his family during this difficult time. In the days to come, RCSD will offer support to the family, Brandon High School team members, coaches, classmates, teachers, and administrators as we all grieve the loss of Phillip.”

Congressman Michael Guest also offered his condolences to the family.
