GREENWOOD — Brittany Thompson was 22 when she disappeared from Greenwood in November 2023. Her body has never been found, investigators believe she is dead, and two men have been indicted in connection with her case.
Thompson last spoke with her mother on the afternoon of Nov. 22, 2023. That evening, she was seen in Greenwood with a man. Her family and friends never heard from her again. When they couldn’t reach her, they started searching on their own. Two days later, on Nov. 24, her Mercedes SUV was found abandoned on Browning Road.
Leflore County deputies arrested Charlie Newman Jr. the same day and charged him with kidnapping.
The prosecution stalled early. A December 2023 preliminary hearing was scrapped when Justice Court Judge James Littleton recused himself. By the time Justice Court Judge Jim Campbell heard the case, prosecutors had added a capital murder charge. Campbell found probable cause, bound Newman over to a Leflore County grand jury and denied him bond.
A second man, Stanley Blackmon of Coila, was arrested in July 2024. That November, a Leflore County grand jury indicted both Blackmon and Newman in connection with Thompson’s disappearance and apparent death.
The indictments have not brought Thompson’s family any closer to finding her. Her aunt, Elizabeth Poindexter, told the Greenwood Commonwealth after an early hearing that the family was hurt and confused and still had no idea where she was. “No family should have this happen,” she said. A family friend, Tameca Reed, told the paper she believed the sheriff’s department had given up on the case. Thompson’s mother, Brianne Blake, has been too distraught to speak publicly.
Brittany Thompson is a Black woman who stood 5 feet tall and weighed 120 to 130 pounds when she went missing. She has black hair and brown eyes and was last seen wearing all black.
