JACKSON — A Jackson man pleaded guilty Wednesday in federal court to attempting to rob a dollar store in the city.
According to court documents and statements made in court, Torrance Stewart, 31, entered a local business on May 2, 2022, intending to commit an armed robbery. He brandished a pistol and threatened a store clerk, demanding money from the cash register. When the register malfunctioned, Stewart fled on foot. Officers with the Jackson Police Department apprehended him in a nearby neighborhood.
Stewart is scheduled to be sentenced Dec. 15 and faces a maximum penalty of 20 years in prison. A federal judge will determine the sentence after considering the U.S. Sentencing Guidelines and other statutory factors.
Assistant U.S. Attorney C. Brett Grantham is prosecuting the case.
The announcement was made by Acting U.S. Attorney Patrick A. Lemon of the Southern District of Mississippi and ATF Special Agent in Charge Joshua Jackson.
The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives is investigating the case with assistance from the Jackson Police Department.
