A man is dead after a shooting at Laxmi Food Mart on University Boulevard on Friday.

Officers responded the location at 1220 University Boulevard. A black male subject identified as Samuel McCray, 34, was found on scene lying on the ground with multiple gunshot wounds.

Information was given that one of the other suspects identified as Matthew Black, 30, was also shot multiple times and had been taken to the Merit Health Hospital by private vehicle.

Police say Black and McCray had a fight while McCray was being robbed, and they ended up shooting at each other. The victim’s vehicle was then stolen from the scene.

McCray was transported by AMR to
UMMC and was rushed into surgery. The suspect, Matthew Black, died at 6:07 a.m., at the Merit Health Hospital.

Police stressed that both McCray and Black are convicted felons, which they pointed out “are among the most serious offenders in the criminal justice system. They are
convicted of violent offenses, such as murder, rape, robbery, and assault.”
