Rookie JPD officers arrested allegedly smoking marijuana in Flowood nature park

It’s not clear why two rookie Jackson police officers allegedly decided to go to a park in Flowood to smoke pot.

Police say Darius Short, 30, and Kenya McCarty, 22, both recent graduates of JPD’s police academy, were allegedly found smoking marijuana near the pond with a gun on a table at the Nature Trail Park.

The incident occurred Friday afternoon, and the officers have been put on administrative leave while Chief James Davis reviews the body camera footage from Flowood officers and an investigation is conducted.

Authorities say they took the gun that was on the table, and later allegedly recovered another gun as well as other drug paraphernalia and some open containers of alcohol.

Both officers were off duty. They were charged with possession of marijuana and open container violations.
