A Hattiesburg man has been arrested after being caught red-handed allegedly stealing catalytic converters.

Just after midnight Friday, officers responded to a report of a man in the 4600 block of Hardy Street who appeared to be attempting to cut catalytic converters off of trucks in the parking lot. When officers arrived, the individual tried to run away towards Interstate 59 and Hardy Street.

The suspect stopped on the I-59 northbound ramp and was taken into custody. He was identified as William Marshal, 52.

Marshal was charged with one count of malicious mischief and two other active warrants out of another jurisdiction. He was booked into the Forrest County Jail, and police say additional charges are pending.
