A Lyft driver is in surgery Tuesday after a customer kidnapped, carjacked and shot her.

Jackson Police Department Deputy Chief Deric Hearn said the driver picked up a man at the Spring Lake Apartments in Byram. He asked her to drive him to the Advantage Apartments on McWillie Circle in Jackson.

The suspect pulled out a gun, police said, and carjacked and kidnapped the woman.

Chief Deric Hearn said after putting her in the back seat of the car at the Advantage Apartments, the suspect took her to Beasley Road in an area near near Wilmington Court. Somewhere during the drive, the Lyft driver escaped and the suspect shot her multiple times. At that point the suspect fled in her car.

The victim was able to make it to a nearby apartment complex for help, and was taken to a local hospital with life-threatening injuries.

Byram Police Chief David Errington said his detectives are assisting in the Byram aspect of the case. He said the investigation will bear out what charges the suspect could face in Byram.

The suspect is a black male in all black clothing and a hoodie, Hearn said, and police believe he is in the driver’s Dodge Journey, with a Scott County tag #SBB 6027.
