There were two fatalities on the state’s highways and interstates over the holiday weekend, according to the latest numbers from the Mississippi Highway Patrol.

Both fatalities were outside of vehicles, and MHP said they are both hit and run incidents. On Sunday around 11:30 a.m., Donterio T. Brewer, 32, of Charleston, was on foot when he was hit by a vehicle traveling southbound on Highway 61 in Desoto County.

Marquis R. Dixon, 31, of Columbus, was on his scooter when he was hit hit by an unknown vehicle on Highway 373 in Lowndes County. That crash occurred Monday around 1:30 a.m.

During the 2021 Fourth of July enforcement period, troopers issued 6,140 citations with 146 DUI arrests. There were 151 crashes, with 50 injuries and the two fatalities. Four of those crashes were alcohol related.

Troop F, the New Albany District, had the most DUI citations, with 40. The next highest was the Jackson District with 19.
