UPDATE:
The victim in a Sunday evening Clinton homicide is a beloved philanthropist and crusader against crime in Jackson.
Clinton Police Department Captain Josh Frazier confirmed Monday morning that Robert Davis, the CEO and Founder of the Better Men Society, was the victim who was fatally shot at a home in Clinton on Sunday.
Davis was well known in the Jackson area for his work to save youth from a life of crime, his work to lower crime in Jackson, his strong leadership, and his kind and giving spirit. But that wasn’t all.
“You have literally saved people from burning houses and cars and would always give God the Glory! You read to school children, fed the homeless, assisted with hurricane relief efforts, cleaned up the city, etc.,” wrote his sister Jovitha Weaver on Facebook. “You had the heart as big as the planet. A Gentle Giant in your own right. I could not be more proud of you and am so glad I got to tell you that during our last conversation.”
Authorities do have a suspect in mind, Frazier said, though they won’t release the identity until the warrants have been issued.
“Tonight someone took you from us in an act of cowardice. However, the loss was not just to the people who loved you but to the City of Jackson and the work you dedicated your life to. You believed in Non Violence and marched for it, only to have you taken away in a senseless act of violence. My plan is to share your accomplishments so people can celebrate your life! This act will not be the only narrative surrounding your life,” wrote Weaver.
She added a statement to the person who killed her brother.
“Whomever committed this senseless crime, DID NOT WIN. My handsome brother planted seeds throughout the area as his legacy. Whomever you are, may you not rest knowing you took away a jewel,” she said. “You took him away because you really didn’t know him!!!! He would have reasoned with you because that’s who he was. He was a peace-loving man!”
State Representative De’Keither Stamps was a long time friend and colleague of Davis.
“My heart is truly hurting with the loss of an amazing brother,” he said. “Robert Davis is more that an amazing man, he is a true friend. Serving on the Board of Directors for the Better Men Society, has truly a been an honor. Until we meet again my friend, I Love You & God’s speed.”
