Man allegedly shot in head over free scrap metal in Perry County

Yesterday afternoon, the Perry County Sheriff’s Office and the Beaumont Police Department responded to a shooting at Greer’s Market in Beaumont.

When police arrived on the scene, they found Noah Fairley with a gunshot wound to the head. He was still responsive and was later transported to Forrest General Hospital.

The alleged shooter, Gary Hinton, was on scene and was transported to the Perry County Sheriff’s Office for questioning. A firearm was found in his possession and taken as evidence.

Sheriff Mitch Nobles told WDAM that Greer’s Market was impacted by the storms in the Pine Belt last weekend, and parts of their tin roof were torn off.

Nobles said the grocer was letting people take the scrapped tin on a first-come-first-serve basis. Police believe Fairly and Hinton were arguing over a piece of scrap metal.

After further investigation, this could be a possible self-defense case and will be presented to a Perry County Grand Jury for further review. At this time, no arrest has been made, but charges could be pending.
