Suspect Flees JCSD Safety Checkpoint, Arrested After Vehicle and Foot Chase

Jones County Sheriff’s Department deputies manning a safety checkpoint on Sunday pursued a vehicle which fled the checkpoint and then the driver who fled on foot.

JCSD deputies Jared Hutto, Chase Smith, and Andrew Yates engaged in short vehicle pursuit on New Hope Road in southern Jones County with Tyran Hammond, age 33. The suspect then stopped his vehicle and fled on foot into the woods.

Deputies chased him through the woods on foot for approximately 150 yards before he was captured while entangled in briars and trying to hide a firearm and drugs.

Hammond was arrested and charged with Weapon Possession by a Felon, Possession of Marijuana in Vehicle, Possession of Paraphernalia, and Resisting Arrest. He is incarcerated at the Jones County Adult Detention Facility pending his initial appearance in Jones County Justice Court.
