According to the Grenada Star, Tuesday afternoon, two inmates that escaped from the Grenada County Jail late Sunday night were captured. The U.S. Marshals helped with this investigation and recapture.

The escaped inmates were identified as 59-year-old Claude Terry Slaughter and 28-year-old Jonathan Wayne Miller. They escaped from the Grenada County Jail early Monday morning. A headcount by Correctional Management Services, the jail’s management service, revealed that the duo had escaped and were on the run.

They were found around noon in a wooded area along Prospect Road in Montgomery County near Duck Hill.

Law enforcement officers and deputies from the Grenada County Sheriff’s Office, Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office, Mississippi Bureau of Investigation, Mississippi Bureau of Narcotics, Mississippi Highway Patrol, Mississippi Department of Corrections, and Mississippi Department of Wildlife, Fisheries and Parks were all on scene helping in the area of Prospect Road along I-55. The inmates were found about two miles south of the Duck HIll exit.

The Grenada Star reports that Montgomery County Coroner Allan Pratt said that Slaughter died from a gunshot sustained during his capture.

Slaughter was transported by helicopter to a nearby hospital. The other escaped inmate, Miller, was taken into custody without incident.

The Grenada County Sheriff’s Office posted on Facebook saying,

Grenada County Sheriff Department would like to thank Montgomery County Sheriff Department, Winona Police Department, US Marshall Service, Mississippi Wildlife Fisheries and Parks, MBN and MBI. Jonathan Wayne Miller was taken into custody and Claude Terry Slaughter was pronounced deceased from a self-inflicted gunshot wound on the scene. MBI is leading the investigation.”

A vehicle was towed from the scene on Prospect Road at the old Prospect Baptist Church.

This case remains under investigation.
