A year after Derrick Coleman was fatally shot, Latasha Crump Coleman’s case is still unsolved

Latasha Crump Coleman was in the midst of a bitter divorce when she went missing two years ago last Friday.

Her estranged husband, Derrick Coleman, had already violated a no-contact order by kicking in the door to her home after she filed domestic violence and malicious mischief charges against him.

Just before she went missing, Latasha began telling her loved ones that Derrick had allegedly threatened her life. He was ordered by the court to wear an ankle monitor when his $250,000 bond was reduced to $50,000. He was never put on the monitor.

Latasha was last physically seen on July 17, 2023, and she mentioned at that time that she was concerned for her safety. The next day, she spoke to family members on the phone, and was last heard from at 7:30 p.m.

She didn’t show up for work on July 19, causing her family to go by her home. She wasn’t there, nor was her vehicle, so they reported her missing. Police issued a Silver Alert in her disappearance.

Latasha drove a gray 2002 Acura MDX bearing Mississippi tag # HPA 8639 and it has not been recovered.

Jackson Police Department spokesman Detective Tommie Brown said this case is still open and an active investigation.

One year ago today, and just a little over a year from Latasha’s disappearance, Derrick Coleman was fatally shot at the Shell gas station on Suncrest Drive at McDowell Road. The gas station owner was also killed and multiple others were wounded.

Police reported that the suspects were in a dark-colored Honda sedan with tinted windows, and the rear passenger opened fire. There was surveillance footage in the case, and police said they were analyzing it to identify the shooters. So far, no arrests have been made.

The initial community reaction was to wonder if Latasha’s family was involved, but they immediately came out and claimed no knowledge of the incident.

Latasha’s family has stayed dedicated to finding her or finding out what happened to her, and they continue to investigate on their own without much feedback from multiple law enforcement agencies they have reached out to. They have expressed concern over Derrick’s connections to certain people in local government and law enforcement.

More than anything, Latasha’s family is concerned that since Derrick is dead, the case will never be solved.

Multiple people have reached out to the family with information on what may have happened to Coleman. It is unclear if they have gone to law enforcement with the same information.
