MLK Day Weather: Dangerous cold and wintry conditions

Mary Apel

In the significant area, a heavy mix of wintry precipitation including sleet, snow, and freezing rain will increase tonight and continue through Monday resulting in dangerous travel conditions and possible power outages. In the elevated area, a mix of freezing rain and sleet will develop Monday and continue into Monday night with travel becoming hazardous.

Dangerously cold air will surge into the area and last until mid week. This will be a long duration freeze event for many locations, and some locations in the extreme area will remain below freezing until Thursday. The lowest temperatures Tuesday night will range from the single digits above zero north to the mid teens south. Wind chill readings will fall below zero in the extreme area, to near zero along the I-20 corridor, and into the single digits farther south.
