The Mississippi Highway Patrol (MHP) is gearing up for the last summer holiday of the year, with the 2024 Labor Day travel period set to begin on Friday, August 30th, at 6:00 a.m. and conclude on Monday, September 2nd, at 12:00 a.m.

“As Labor Day marks the ‘unofficial end of summer,’ the Mississippi Highway Patrol and law enforcement across the state will be working diligently to ensure the safety of you, your family, and your friends across Mississippi! Remember to be responsible and drive safely,” said Department of Public Safety Commissioner Sean Tindell.

During this time, troopers will conduct high-visibility patrols and safety checkpoints throughout the state to ensure safe travel on Mississippi roadways. The primary goals for the holiday weekend include deterring speeding, impaired, or distracted driving, minimizing crashes, and promoting seatbelt use.

Lt. Colonel James Ivory, Assistant Chief of the Mississippi Highway Patrol, emphasized the importance of safety during the busy holiday weekend, which coincides with the start of the college football season.

“As you gather with your family and friends, and with the kickoff of college football, our roads are expected to be busy. Let us all make a conscious effort to drive safe, wear your seatbelt, and be smart on this holiday weekend,” he said.

During the 2023 Labor Day holiday travel period, MHP investigated 147 crashes, resulting in four fatalities, and issued 698 citations for various offenses.
