The Mississippi Cyber Unit has issued a scam alert, warning residents of an increase in fraudulent schemes exploiting family members and friends of the recently deceased.

Scammers are creating fake Facebook groups, under the guise of “In Memory” pages, falsely offering live-streaming services for funeral ceremonies in exchange for a fee.

These fake pages, designed to steal money and personal information, have been gaining traction. In addition to funeral services, similar scams have been identified in other events such as graduations, concerts, weddings, and sports events.

The Mississippi Department of Public Safety advises individuals to verify any links through a second, trusted source before providing sensitive information. Residents are urged not to engage with suspicious pages or share private data.

The state continues to emphasize the importance of staying vigilant online to protect against cyber threats.

Key Tips to Stay Safe:

  • Always double-check the legitimacy of any service offering sensitive or paid information.
  • Do not share personal data on unfamiliar or suspicious pages.

Mississippians are encouraged to remain alert and safeguard their online activities.
