The Mississippi State Department of Health (MSDH) has confirmed the state’s second death from West Nile Virus (WNV) this year.

While details such as the patient’s age, gender, and location are being withheld for privacy reasons, officials noted that the individual had underlying health conditions and was previously included in the state’s case count.

The first death, confirmed on August 15, involved a similar situation with underlying health issues.

As of now, there have been 27 reported human cases of West Nile Virus in Mississippi in 2024.

The virus is transmitted through mosquito bites, and the MSDH encourages residents to take preventive measures to reduce their risk. This includes using mosquito repellents, wearing protective clothing, and eliminating standing water around homes.
