The Meridian Police Department is alerting the public to Mississippi State Law 97-37-39, which regulates the manufacture, possession, and use of machine gun conversion devices, commonly known as “switches.”

Effective July 1, 2024, individuals in Meridian who attach these devices to semi-automatic firearms, allowing them to fire multiple rounds like a machine gun, will face serious legal consequences.

Police Chief Deborah Naylor-Young emphasized the department’s commitment to addressing gun violence. “Those who are causing chaos in the City of Meridian should be warned that the Meridian Police Department will charge anyone involved in shootings with these modified weapons,” she said.

Penalties for violations are severe.

A first offense is classified as a felony, potentially leading to up to 10 years in prison and fines reaching $10,000.

For a second or subsequent offense, individuals could face up to 15 years in prison and fines of up to $20,000.

The Meridian Police Department urges community members to stay informed and report any suspicious activity related to firearms.
