A large-scale infrastructure project is currently underway to improve traffic safety and optimize traffic flow along Interstate 55.

The project, which began in July, involves resurfacing five miles of I-55 from State Route 24 to U.S. 98, constructing two new roundabouts at the I-55 interchange on U.S. 98, and raising four bridges over I-55.

These overpasses include Delaware Avenue, Park Avenue, Enterprise Road, and Robb Street.

The work is intended to enhance interstate safety and improve the efficiency of traffic flow at the busy U.S. 98 interchange.

Construction on the roundabouts has commenced, with traffic on the westbound lanes of the U.S. 98 overpass being shifted into the eastbound lanes to create a head-to-head configuration, allowing for construction to continue.

As part of the bridge-raising efforts, the I-55 overpasses will be closed for several weeks, one at a time, to allow construction crews to safely elevate the structures. The project is expected to be completed in 2027.

Drivers in the area are advised to plan for potential delays and remain cautious in work zones.
