On Tuesday, at approximately 12:34 p.m., Lauderdale County E-911 received a distress call from a home in the 9000 block of Blizzard Road, reporting that a woman had been shot. Deputies and Metro Ambulance responded to the scene.

The victim, Helen Stewart, was found with a gunshot wound, and her husband, Joseph Stewart, was taken into custody at the scene.

Joseph Stewart was Initially charged with Aggravated Assault and was booked into the Lauderdale County Detention Facility.

Helen Stewart later died from her injuries. Following her death, investigators consulted with the District Attorney and are in the process of upgrading the charge against Joseph Stewart to Murder. No bond has been set for the new charge at this time.

The investigation remains ongoing, and additional details will be presented to the grand jury for consideration.
