(Queen City Newsfeed) – A suspect has been arrested in connection to a bomb threat phoned into G.W. Carver Elementary School on Tuesday, August 27, which prompted a swift response from authorities.

The threat, which came in at 11:28 a.m. from a blocked number, was deemed not credible.

Kelvin Nix, 37, of Flowood was arrested after the school executed its crisis plan, following recommendations from Mississippi Homeland Security, the FBI Field Office in Jackson, and the Mississippi Bureau of Investigations. The Mississippi Highway Patrol and Lauderdale County Emergency Management Agency also assisted.

In a press briefing held at 2 p.m. by MPSD Police Chief Cornelius Parks and Carver Elementary School Principal Amanda Shadwick, it was stated that Nix had previously dated a Carver Elementary employee.

Nix was found at a local hospital in Flowood. After being discharged, he was taken to the Lauderdale County Detention Center around 2:30 a.m. Wednesday.

Flowood officers had visited Nix’s home earlier in the day after Homeland Security technology traced the call to a residence in the area, but he did not answer the door.

Chief Parks said the call only lasted 15 seconds but investigators were still able to ping the location.

Investigators said Nix had an injury from a week prior, and he may have used this injury as an excuse to avoid officers by going to the hospital after their initial visit to the suspect’s home– but they aren’t 100% certain this is why he went to the hospital.

Nix was charged with a felony count of making a terroristic threat.

Bond for Nix was set at $100,000.

Chief Parks said Nix is originally from Meridian but has lived in Flowood for the past 3-4 years.

The Meridian Public School District Police Department led the arrest.

Emergency bus drivers transported students to a safe zone while a cadaver dog confirmed that no bomb was present.

Chief Parks highlighted the success of the recent intruder drill and fire drills, which helped ensure the smooth evacuation of the school.
