Early in the morning on Wednesday, August 21, a routine patrol by the Rankin County Sheriff’s Department led to the arrest of Montana Jack Davis, a suspected copper thief.

A Rankin County deputy noticed what looked like a disabled black 2011 Nissan Rogue on Hwy 471 near Hwy 25 at around 5:17 a.m.

The vehicle was initially unoccupied, and after logging its details, the deputy resumed patrol.

Shortly after, the deputy returned to check on the vehicle and noticed a man, later identified as Davis, coming out from behind a locked gate at a nearby commercial property.

Davis got into SUV and began driving northbound on Hwy 471, prompting the deputy to initiate a traffic stop.

During the stop, the deputy discovered copper wires, tools, and other items consistent with burglary inside the vehicle. Further investigation revealed that Davis had stolen copper wire and a digital security system from the area after breaking into a semi-truck trailer.

Interviews and search warrants uncovered evidence linking Davis to two additional copper thefts in Brandon and one in Flowood. Davis now faces multiple charges, including Theft, Burglary, and Possession of Burglary Tools.

The Rankin County Sheriff’s Department urges residents to report any suspicious activity to local authorities as the area has seen an uptick in copper thefts.
