A routine traffic stop on Interstate 55 escalated into a high-speed pursuit after the driver of a Dodge Challenger fled from Mississippi Highway Patrol State Troopers.

The incident began at approximately 10:51 a.m. when troopers stopped the Challenger for speeding and failing to wear a seatbelt at the 107-mile marker.

After receiving a citation, the driver, identified as 23-year-old Alontavious Sims of Jackson, MS, threw the ticket out the window and sped off.

Troopers attempted to initiate another traffic stop for littering, but Sims refused to comply, leading authorities on a pursuit.

During the chase, the Challenger sideswiped a Toyota Corolla. Thankfully, the driver of the Corolla was unharmed.

The pursuit ended at the 102-mile marker on I-55 South, where Sims was taken into custody without further incident and transported to the Madison County Detention Center in Canton, MS.

Charges against Sims are pending as the Mississippi Highway Patrol continues its investigation into the incident.
