The Dolly Parton Imagination Library is a literacy program founded by living legend and singer-songwriter Dolly Parton. Established in 1995, Dolly was inspired by her own father’s inability to read and write. The program aims to foster a love for reading in young children from birth to age five and provides free books to enrolled children on a monthly basis, delivered directly to their homes.
The Imagination Library operates through partnerships with local communities, organizations, and sponsors. Participating children receive age-appropriate books selected by a panel of experts, with a focus on promoting early childhood literacy and encouraging parent-child engagement through reading.
Dolly Parton established this program with the goal of ensuring that all children have access to books, regardless of their family’s income. Since its inception, the Dolly Parton Imagination Library has expanded globally and has provided millions of books to children around the world, helping to inspire their imaginations, develop their language skills, and lay the foundation for a lifelong love of reading.
“I know there are children in communities around the world with big dreams and the seeds of these dreams are often found in books,” said Dolly. “It’s been one of my greatest gifts in life to help instill a love of reading through my Imagination Library. Reaching 200 million books worldwide is a major milestone that I’m so very proud of, and I want to thank all of our local program partners, funders and supporters from the bottom of my heart. But we’re just getting warmed up, we have so much more to do! Together, we can inspire even more children to dream more, learn more, care more and be more.”
