Beside Still Waters: Who will roll the stone away?

And they asked each other, “Who will roll the stone away from the entrance of the tomb?” But when they looked up, they saw that the stone, which was very large, had been rolled away. – Mark 16:3-4

I don’t know about you, but I often run across things in my life that I know I can’t do by myself. I set out, like Mary Magdalene, Mary the mother of James, and Salome to do some thing I’ve decided I need to do, and along the way I realize there are going to be things in the way that I may not be able to overcome.

Being honest, sometimes that makes me quit. “If the obstacles are too big, why would I tell myself I can make this happen,” I ask. Then I turn around and head home.

But the Marys and Salome had already thought about the stone in front of the tomb and they set out anyway. The mission was important enough to them that they just figured they’d figure out a way to handle it when they got there.

They were expecting to struggle to roll that stone out of the way, and then to annoint Jesus’ body with burial perfumes and herbs. They certainly were not anticipating getting there and the stone would be out of the way, much less that the body of Christ would not be there. What set out as a duty and a sorrowful mission became one of the greatest discoveries, not to mention greatest victories, in history.

What are you dreading? What are you looking at, thinking it’s going to be impossible to do? Like me, are you letting that stop you and going home, or like the women on Easter Sunday, are you going forward in spite of what seems impossible, knowing that if this is God’s will, it will be done?

It’s Abraham, taking Isaac to be sacrificed and trusting there would be a replacement. It’s Moses, leading the Israelites out of Egypt and knowing God would make a way. It’s Jesus, taking 5 loaves and 2 fish and feeding 5,000.

God makes a way. When you are in His will and you are trusting Him to simply let you do His bidding, He gives you a way.

Whatever it is set before you, He can move that mountain into the sea. He can roll that stone away, and He will. ❤️
