Beside Still Waters: Those who plot and scheme

Therese Apel

“Do not those who plot evil go astray? But those who plan what is good find love and faithfulness.” – Proverbs 14:22

Even just in the last few years, I have met some people who are serious schemers. People who can carry out elaborate campaigns to destroy others, sometimes simply because of an old family beef. In other cases, it’s political, or it’s because the plotter got caught and they’re angry at the people that caught them. There are a million reasons people lie in wait and make detailed plans to hurt each other.

Do you see how that is nothing but Satan himself? What would cause you to plan harm to people and their lives or families or businesses or careers? Nothing but Satan. We see it in the life of Christ. Almost from the beginning, we see the Pharisees and the Sanhedrin talking about how they can kill Him.

We all know someone who just brings light to the world. They’re constantly sewing blessings into other people’s lives, and we always notice when people take advantage of that. Then we say, “Well, she’s just too nice. He’s just a pushover.”

Nope. That is God’s heart. Yes, there comes a time for righteous anger, and a time to run people out of the temple with a bullwhip, but none of that is self-serving. Giving is a love language. There are people who spend their life giving and helping and uplifting because it’s just love spilling out of them.

Here’s just one of many places in Proverbs (this one is by far the gentlest) where God warns us against plots and schemes, especially against His people.

What you give will eventually return tenfold, good or bad. Choose your side wisely. ❤️
