Beside Still Waters: The message we want to hear

“For the time will come when people will not put up with sound doctrine. Instead, to suit their own desires, they will gather around them a great number of teachers to say what their itching ears want to hear. They will turn their ears away from the truth and turn aside to myths.” – 2 Timothy 4:3-4

These days, nobody agrees with anybody. What’s worse, hardly anybody seems willing to compromise or agree to disagree. In 2 Timothy, we learned that’s because God is getting closer to coming back every day. As Satan fights to take us away from him, people are becoming more self-centered, more selfish, and less concerned about the needs of others.

These verses talk about the fact that we all want to find the message that we want to hear, because in the end, none of us wants accountability. We would rather keep up what we’re doing and have people tell us that “No, it’s OK, the Bible used to mean something else;” when what’s true is God is the same yesterday, today, and forever.

I used to feel that way about some things. But you know what I found? The closer you get to your Savior, the more you can hear his voice. You instinctively want to make him proud, and then you find less desire in yourself to do things that break his heart.

Someone told me once that a really interesting and challenging prayer to pray is, “Holy Spirit, show me the way you talk to me so that I can hear your voice.” Then you listen. When you’re trying to hear something you can only barely hear, what do you do? You get closer.

As you get in the word and you love God and your neighbor, he starts to speak directly and clearly. When you realize that your Heavenly Father loves you so much that he speaks to *you directly* on this planet full of people, what does that do for you? How does that feel?
Listen: He’ll do it. ❤️
