Beside Still Waters: Strength for the weary

Therese Apel

Aubree is the strongest little girl I know.

“He gives strength to the weary and increases the power of the weak.” – Isaiah 40:29

That little girl in the picture is one of the best examples of strength that I know. Diagnosed with a brain tumor that doctors said would kill her in six months, she is still fighting years after her diagnosis.

This morning, when I woke up and looked at my verse of the day, I was not feeling it. I”m so tired, and it feels like everything is way too heavy. While I know God will work all things out for the good, I wonder if crushing me under the weight of business, relationships, responsibilities, decisions, family, and lonliness is what He thinks is good for me. But then I thought of Aubree.

Y’all, all God is asking us to do is to put one foot in front of the other when we can’t, and when we need to lay still, to lay in His lap.

Romans 8:26 tells us, “In the same way, the Spirit helps us in our weakness. We do not know what we ought to pray for, but the Spirit himself intercedes for us through wordless groans.”

When we don’t have the words, He is standing in the gap, interceding for us in front of His father. He’s not telling us we have to be good at being strong, He’s saying we just need to hold His hand.

Who knows how it all turns out? Only God. But I can guarantee that where you end up is a lot more about the strength of the God you cling to than about what you can accomplish on your own.

This verse promises He’ll bring us strength. It may take a while, but He keeps those promises. There’s also peace and joy and a love beyond comprehension that he offers us now.

Cry until your guts hurt if you have to. Punch a punching bag, go out driving, do something with your hands, or just lay still. Weakness hurts, but it’s temporary.

Hold on to God, even when you can’t hold on to anything else. His promises are big, and He is bigger. ❤️
