Beside Still Waters: Loyalty in the Digital Age

Therese Apel

1 Thessalonians 5:6-22 – “Rejoice always, pray continually, give thanks in all circumstances; for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus. Do not quench the Spirit. Do not treat prophecies with contempt but test them all; hold on to what is good, reject every kind of evil.”

Just a few verses before that one, verse 13 tells us to live at peace with each other.

Throughout the New Testament, we are constantly being reminded to focus on positive things and not involve ourselves in the daily dramas and the quarrels and arguments of this world. Yet here we are.

This week I talked to a friend who used to always be on social media. He was telling me about how he just doesn’t get on it anymore and he goes to work and he goes home and nothing from the outside really bothers him. The thing is, he looked like he was doing great. There was a lightness around him that I haven’t seen in a long time. I think the social media fast is doing him a lot of good.

Is it possible that we let Facebook or any of the other social medias occupy our thoughts in places that should be reserved for the Lord? Is it possible that we let drama that we’ve seen on the news or heard from our neighbor become more important than living in peace with one another?

Do you think maybe instead of holding onto what is good and rejecting all evil, sometimes we focus too much on the things that are thrown in our path to make us forget who He is?

Lord, help us today to dwell on what is yours, and not on what comes from the world. ❤️
