Beside Still Waters: He’s not a TAME lion

Haven’t you read this passage of Scripture:
“‘The stone the builders rejected
has become the cornerstone;
the Lord has done this,
and it is marvelous in our eyes’ – Mark 12:10-11

If you’ve read The Chronicles of Narnia, or even just “The Lion, The Witch, and the Wardrobe,” you may recall the phrase, “But he’s not a TAME lion.” Of course, in those books by C.S. Lewis, Aslan represents Jesus, and at one point is sacrificed to save Narnia and comes back even stronger.

I think of that phrase often: “He’s not a TAME lion.” Friends, God is not a tame God. Our Lord does not have to follow any of the rules we as humans have written for him. He doesn’t have to support our political stands, He doesn’t have to uplift who we like, He doesn’t have to give us what we want just because we want it.

God is the God of the outcast, of the leper, of the sick in need of a doctor. He’s the God of being born in a barn, His followers were a group of guys who in most cases were not society’s finest.

David was the smallest. Abraham was the oldest. John the Baptist ran amok in the woods in his camel hair clothes, eating bugs. Peter couldn’t control his temper, Thomas doubted.

God is the God of the outcast. But in our church we want our standout Christians to fit a mold. A family man, well-respected, well-mannered, submits to authority… But look at Jesus.

“Blessed are you when others revile you and persecute you and utter all kinds of evil against you falsely on my account. Rejoice and be glad, for your reward is great in heaven, for so they persecuted the prophets who were before you.” – Matthew 5:11-12

Serving Jesus means we may never fit in. There may never be a spot for us where we are fully understood and accepted and loved by anyone on earth. And you know what? That’s okay.

Jesus has told us that our reward is great in Heaven. He has promised that the stone that was rejected by the builders will be the cornerstone.

A follower of Christ doesn’t look or act or live a certain way beyond simply striving every day to have a closer walk with Him.

“By this everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another.” – John 13:35

Simply put, there’s your cornerstone. What will you build? ❤️
