Beside Still Waters: God’s in your boat

A furious squall came up, and the waves broke over the boat, so that it was nearly swamped. Jesus was in the stern, sleeping on a cushion.
The disciples woke him and said to him, “Teacher, don’t you care if we drown?” He got up, rebuked the wind and said to the waves, “Quiet! Be still!” Then the wind died down and it was completely calm.
He said to his disciples, “Why are you so afraid? Do you still have no faith?”
They were terrified and asked each other, “Who is this? Even the wind and the waves obey him!” – Mark 4:37-41

This is one of my very favorite stories about Jesus. The world is coming apart around the boat, and Jesus is sleeping. The disciples are losing their minds, and Jesus is sleeping. This could be the END OF IT ALLLLL, and Jesus is sleeping.

Some people use that to say Jesus sleeps on us. He’s not paying attention. He doesn’t even care enough to stay awake.

BUT… Here’s what’s real. All of that chaos, and Jesus was totally relaxed. You know why? Because He knew how it was going to turn out. He could rest in perfect peace because the outcome was His.

“But the disciples had no way of knowing what was going to happen! How can He rebuke them for their lack of faith?” you may ask.

Yeah they did. They basically did because their Lord who loved them was totally calm. Plus, even with all this going on, He was in the boat with them. Instead of thinking, “WHY ISN’T GOD FREAKING OUT AND HELPING ME?” we should probably think, “Hey look, God’s not worried.”

He’s the God of Peace in the chaos. He’s the God of life and death situations. He’s the God over financial stress, over health issues, over heartbreak.

Relax. Trust. God’s in your boat. ❤️
