Beside Still Waters: A New Thing

Therese Apel

“See, I am doing a new thing! Now it springs up; do you not perceive it? I am making a way in the wilderness and streams in the wasteland.” – Isaiah 43:19

As I write this, 2024 is less than 7 hours old, and I’m having to remind myself to give God the same problems I had in 2023. Or yesterday. Each year we take the new number and we splash it all over social media: “New year, new me!”

I don’t know about you, but all the years have felt the same since 2020 started, and I just keep thinking maybe this is what it is to be a grownup. But then there’s God’s promise: I am doing a new thing.

He is, and He will. Every day He’s bringing us to the fulfillment of our purpose here on earth, but every day we have to be willing to get up and follow him. He is making a way in the wilderness and streams in the wasteland, but what does that mean?

Here’s what I think, as a small business owner. There are so many days I have absolutely no idea what the next thing to do is. What do I do to grow from here? What do I do to prevent a loss? What do I do when I have nothing left to give anybody, and it’s because all I do is work? WHAT DO I DO, GOD??

He’s making a way. It’s as simple as that. Like the Israelites leaving Egypt, I have to be willing to follow Him, and I need to do it without any arguing or complaining. Did you know that the 40 years Israel spent in the wilderness could have been completed in 11 days? It was their lack of faith that delayed them 39 years and 354 days.

Get up and follow God without question.

But God, where is the money going to come from? Who is going to help me? Who do I turn to when I’m alone? What if I can’t find the right things I need to accomplish your plan? What if I’m tired?

I am making streams in the wilderness, He says. From those streams you can get anything you need, whether it’s food, water, cleanliness, travel… and He’s telling us they will be there.

It’s a long journey that should have only taken 11 days, but we’re just human and He’s constantly giving us new beginnings and signs along the way that He’s got us.

God is bending our path to His glory and for our own good. ❤️

“Therefore if anyone is in Christ, the new creation has come. The old has gone, the new is here.” – 2 Cor. 5:17
