Tuesday night, shortly after 11:00 p.m., the Wiggins Fire Department and Stone County Fire Service responded to a vehicle fire involving a 53-foot refrigerated van trailer loaded with watermelons. Upon arrival, units found the trailer fully engulfed in flames.

Firefighters battled the intense blaze for over an hour, working tirelessly to extinguish it. With the aid of heavy equipment, personnel on the scene were able to sift through the wreckage of the destroyed trailer to ensure the fire was completely out.

Crews remained on site until around 4:00 a.m., working diligently to clean up the highway and restore normal traffic flow.

The driver of the truck was able to disconnect from the trailer before the fire reached the truck, preventing further damage. Nobody was injured in the incident.

The Wiggins Fire Department said, “We want to thank everyone who helped out last night for their assistance,” a spokesperson said. “Multiple agencies were involved, and it was truly a team effort. Our community is simply the best!”

The Stone County Fire Service, Mississippi Department of Transportation, Mississippi Highway Patrol, Stone County Sheriff’s Department, and Wiggins Police Department all helped with the scene.
