Morgan Howard

Five people, including one child, are recovering from a two-vehicle crash that occurred Thursday night in Jones County.

WDAM reports that, according to Dana Bumgardner, Public Information Officer for the Jones County Fire Council, the M&M, Rustin, and Powers volunteer fire departments responded to a collision on U.S. Highway 84 East around 6:58 p.m.

The crash happened in the eastbound lanes between Mill Creek Road and Jessie Malone Road. When first responders arrived, firefighters immediately provided emergency aid to the injured.

The scene included a Chevy Impala in the median and a Kia Sportage on its driver’s side along the right side of the highway. Witnesses reported that the collision happened just as the Impala entered U.S. 84 eastbound. The Impala sustained moderate damage to its rear, while the Kia suffered significant damage due to the impact and rollover.

The Impala was carrying three adults, one of whom appeared to be seriously injured, while the other two sustained minor injuries. The Kia was occupied by one adult and one child, both of whom suffered minor injuries. EMServ Ambulance Service transported two individuals to the hospital for further care.

The crash scattered about 150 feet of glass and debris across the highway, leading to a slowdown of traffic for over an hour as responders worked to help the injured and clear the scene. The Mississippi Highway Patrol and the Jones County Sheriff’s Department also responded, with MHP taking over the investigation. No further injuries were reported.
