15 People Killed In Crashes Over Labor Day Holiday Travel Period, According To MHP

The Mississippi Highway Patrol (MHP) concluded its 2024 Labor Day Holiday Travel Period at midnight on Monday, September 2nd. The enforcement period, which began on Friday, August 30th at 6:00 a.m., resulted in 7,123 citations issued, 122 arrests for impaired driving, and 740 citations for occupant restraint violations.

MHP also responded to 155 crashes during the travel period, resulting in 81 injuries and seven fatal accidents across the state, leading to 15 deaths. The fatal crashes occurred in Grenada, Warren, Stone, Wilkinson, Prentiss, and Issaquena Counties.

Fatal Crash Summaries:

  • Grenada County (August 30, 2024): At 9:54 a.m., a single-vehicle crash on Highway 8 resulted in the death of 62-year-old Barry Campbell of Grenada, MS. His vehicle, a Subaru STX, left the highway and collided with an embankment. Campbell was pronounced dead at the scene.
  • Warren County (August 31, 2024): At 12:40 a.m., a crash involving a 2018 Volvo Commercial Passenger Bus on Interstate 20 near Bovina resulted in seven fatalities. The bus, registered to Regiomontanos Autobuses, overturned, killing six passengers on the scene, with one more succumbing to injuries at a hospital. The bus was en route from Atlanta, GA, to Dallas, TX, carrying 41 passengers and two drivers. The crash remains under investigation by multiple agencies, including the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB).
  • Stone County (August 31, 2024): At 4:00 p.m., a 2007 Toyota 4Runner overturned on Highway 49. The driver, Kristen Arendale, and passenger, Jamie Lynn Sullivan, were transported to a hospital where Sullivan later died from her injuries.
  • Grenada County (September 1, 2024): At 3:15 p.m., a two-vehicle crash on Highway 7 claimed the lives of 18-year-old Robert Noah of Jackson, MS, and 74-year-old Lizzie Tucker of Richmond, TX. Noah’s Subaru Crosstrek collided with a Jeep Wagoneer driven by Peaches McMurray of Batesville, MS.
  • Wilkinson County (September 2, 2024): At 9:15 a.m., a 2014 Freightliner roll-off truck overturned on Highway 563, resulting in the death of 35-year-old Lamonthan Chapman of Gloster, MS. The passenger, Nicholas Call of Liberty, MS, sustained injuries and was airlifted to a hospital.
  • Prentiss County (September 2, 2024): At 2:00 p.m., a collision on Highway 365 between a Ford Expedition and a CF MOTO ATV resulted in the deaths of 82-year-old Billie J. Moss and his passenger, Billie J. Moss Jr., both of Tishomingo, MS.
  • Issaquena County (September 2, 2024): At 3:46 p.m., a multi-vehicle crash on US-61 North near Valley Park involved three vehicles and resulted in several injuries. The details of the crash, including the identities of those involved, are still under investigation.

All incidents are currently being investigated by the Mississippi Highway Patrol to determine the causes and circumstances surrounding each crash.
