A 15-year-old has been charged as an adult after taking a gun to school in Tate County.

A release from Tate County Sheriff Brad Lance says that on Wednesday at 12:50 p.m., police received a call from Independence High School that a student had been found in possession of a firearm. School officials had followed the school policy and locked the facility down.

Deputies responding to the scene were told that the 15-year-old student, Aaron Richmond, was in the office and that they had taken the gun.

Richmond was arrested and taken to the Tate County jail. Lance said he is charged with one count of possession of a firearm on school property as an adult pursuant to the state law. He will be held without bond until his initial appearance in Tate County Justice Court.

No shots were fired at the school and there were no injuries.
