Madison and Rankin County District Attorney Bubba Bramlett, Jr. announced that six teenagers have pled guilty in connection with an attempted carjacking in Ridgeland.
The individuals—19-year-old Ahmaud Lampkin, 14; 14-year-old 19-year-old Cortarrius Huff, 16-year-old Pernell Moore, 17-year-old Braylon Cooper, 14-year-old Tristan Burns, and 16-year-old Camerious Huff,—entered their pleas before Judge Dewey Arthur in Madison County Circuit Court.
On December 31, 2023, the group left a hotel on Ridgewood Road and walked through the At Home parking lot onto County Line Road, planning to carjack someone. They arrived at Ridgeland Ranch Apartments and confronted a man loading items into his car, threatening him with a handgun and taking his keys. However, the teens were unable to start the car and fled the scene.
The Ridgeland Police Department quickly located four of the suspects in the Northpark area. Investigators linked the teens to the crime through fingerprints, surveillance footage, and a video found on a cell phone showing the group joking about the carjacking while displaying the gun.
Sentences for the teens varied based on their involvement. Ahmaud Lampkin, who held the gun, pled guilty to Armed Carjacking and Conspiracy to Commit Armed Carjacking, receiving a 15-year sentence. Cortarrius Huff was sentenced to 20 years for Armed Carjacking and Directing a Minor to Commit a Felony. Pernell Moore received a 10-year sentence for Armed Carjacking and Conspiracy. Braylon Cooper pled guilty to Armed Carjacking, with sentencing scheduled for September 30, 2024. Tristan Burns and Camerious Huff, who were not directly involved in the confrontation, received lighter sentences of one year and five years, respectively, for Conspiracy to Commit Armed Carjacking.
