JACKSON — A 5-year-old child died early Monday after being shot in the head at a home on Rutledge Avenue, according to interim Hinds County Coroner Jeramiah Howard.
Howard said the child was taken to a hospital around 2:15 a.m. and was later pronounced dead.
Investigators believe the child accessed the father’s handgun while the father was asleep on the couch, and that the shooting was accidental, Howard said.
The case remains under investigation.
