The Mississippi Bureau of Investigation (MBI) is investigating an officer-involved shooting that happened last night, (Tuesday), involving officers from the Jackson Police Department.
The incident began with a hit-and-run report on Interstate 220, during which shots were fired, striking an 18-wheeler.
Chief Wade said the situation happened on 220 when a vehicle struck an 18-wheeler.
The vehicle that hit the 18-wheeler was stolen and the driver of the vehicle began shooting at the 18-wheeler.
Chief Wade said his narcotics officers were responding to the crash and the driver of the 18-wheeler and a witness warned detectives that the guy was shooting at them.
Officers got into a foot chase with the armed suspect when they arrived on the scene.
The suspect ran up to McCain from 22o, and brandished a weapon at the narcotics officer chasing him.
Officers fired upon him, striking him in the lower extremities. His injuries do not appear to be life-threatening.
“We do not want to have to resort to deadly force in any situation, but these officers want to go home.” Chief Wade state.
Chief Wade said that the weapon and magazines were recovered from the scene and MBI has taken over the investigation.
Chief Wade stated,
“We don’t know why he was this violent tonight, we don’t know why he was shooting at these individuals, we don’t know why he was going to attempt to shoot at law enforcement or point a gun at them, but we will find out by the time this investigation concludes.”
Police Chief Wade said nobody was injured, but the police officer was shaken up and upset. He said they were just driving down the highway trying to help with an accident when there was unexpected gunfire.
Chief Wade said this is the second incident on 220 today, with the first being the woman allegedly shooting during a road rage incident.
The suspect has been taken to the hospital for treatment of his injuries and will later be charged.
Once the investigation is complete, MBI will present its findings to the Attorney General’s Office for review.
