UPDATE: 8-Year-Old Dies After Getting Hit By School Bus In Madison

UPDATE: As of 9:35 p.m. the child has died from her injuries after getting hit by a school bus in Madison.

The Madison Police Department shared on Facebook that her identity is being withheld pending notification of next of kin.

The police department stated,

“We Thank You for your continued prayers for the family, The Madison County School District, medical staff and all first responders on scene. This matter remains under investigation and the results of the investigation will be forwarded to the Madison/ Rankin County District Attorney’s Office.”

The Madison Police Department said that several rumors have circulated on social media regarding the possible intoxication of the bus driver. The Madison Police Department said they assure the public that, as part of standard procedure in any fatal accident investigation, a DUI/Drug Recognition Expert was present at the scene.

Preliminary findings indicate no signs of impairment; however, toxicology samples have been collected and submitted for examination, and the department is currently awaiting the results.

“The Madison Police Department is committed to conducting a thorough investigation into this matter, and the findings will be forwarded to the Madison/Rankin District Attorney’s Office for further review. As this investigation continues, we ask for ongoing prayers for the family, friends, students, school staff, and first responders affected by this tragic event.”

On October 2, at approximately 4:20 PM, the Madison Police Department responded to a school bus accident involving an eight-year-old girl at the intersection of Cobblestone Drive and Rockwood Drive.

First responders provided immediate medical assistance, and the child was transported to UMMC by Pafford, where she is currently in critical condition.

Authorities are urging the public to avoid the area as Madison Police continue their investigation and reconstruct the scene.

All other school children on the bus have been safely reunited with their parents. Our thoughts and prayers are with the family and the Madison County School District during this difficult time.
