State Auditor Shad White announced today that Special Agents from his office have arrested Memory Smith, the former bookkeeper of Quitman High School, on one count of embezzlement.
Smith is accused of embezzling cash from the school’s activity fund, using the money for personal expenses. The investigation led by the Auditor’s office revealed the alleged fraudulent activity.
“Thank you to our investigators for uncovering this fraud,” said State Auditor Shad White. “We have a zero-tolerance policy for fraud in this office, and we will continue doing the work to ensure that tax dollars are spent properly.”
If convicted, Smith faces up to $5,000 in fines and a maximum of 20 years in prison. It is important to note that all persons arrested by the Mississippi Office of the State Auditor are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
