Opera Mississippi to Perform ‘Songs for a New World’ in Jackson

JACKSON — Opera Mississippi will bring Tony Award-winning composer Jason Robert Brown’s “Songs for a New World” to Duling Hall in Jackson on April 24-25, offering audiences two nights of professional musical theatre centered on themes of change, resilience and hope.

Tickets are $35 per person. Each evening begins with an Opera Happy Hour at 6 p.m., with the concert starting at 7 p.m. Duling Hall is located at 622 Duling Ave.

The production features four professional vocalists: John Christopher Adams, Maryann Kyle, Peter Lake and Sarah Stembel. They will be performing a song cycle that blends pop, gospel and contemporary musical theatre. Rather than a traditional narrative, the show presents a series of self-contained scenes depicting people at pivotal moments of transformation.

Brown, who won a Tony Award for “The Bridges of Madison County,” wrote “Songs for a New World” as his debut stage work. The piece has since become a staple of regional and professional musical theatre nationally.

Founded in 1945, Opera Mississippi is the ninth oldest continuously operating opera company in the United States and the state’s only professional opera company. The organization’s mission includes educational outreach, emerging artist development and preserving the operatic art form.

Tickets are available at operamississippi.org.
