The former Mississippi Department of Public Safety administration tower off Woodrow Wilson Avenue is scheduled for demolition Sunday, Oct. 4, prompting temporary road closures and traffic restrictions in the area.

According to a release from the governor’s office, several nearby roads and portions of Interstate 55 will close beginning at 7:45 a.m. The closures are expected to last about 30 minutes.
I-55 southbound at Lakeland Drive and I-55 northbound at Fortification Street will be temporarily closed.

Woodrow Wilson Avenue at Murrah Drive, VA Center Drive just past the main entrance to the VA hospital, and Museum Boulevard between Riverside Drive and Lakeland Drive will also be closed.
University Drive just past VA Connections Drive will have restricted access.

Officials said local traffic may detour onto Lakeland Drive or Fortification Street. Through traffic will remain on the interstate, and drivers are encouraged to allow extra time Sunday morning.

Motorists can check MDOT Traffic for real-time information about closures and conditions.
